I am a football coach, among other things. I believe in planning, practice, and preparation. I do not believe hope as a plan.
But there might be more to McCain's metaphor. Perhaps he believes that the Tea Party caucus has hyperbolically cast President Obama as the evil overlord Sauron and themselves as the pure, persecuted and populist Hobbits who, despite their stature and apparent meekness, will nevertheless inherit Middle-Earth. If that's so, I applaud him once again.
Look, I don't want this blog to become unnecessarily political, but my particular issue with the current atmosphere in Washington has to do with oversimplification and magical thinking--two aspects of Tea Party dogma that McCain seems to be attacking here.
So a rare (perhaps even unique) bravo to Senator McCain for this particular speech.
